The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially distanced itself from supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. The party’s national chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, made this clear during the inauguration of the party’s zonal and state congress and appeal committees in Abuja.
The inauguration is part of the party’s efforts to strengthen its internal democratic structures and build a credible opposition platform. The committees will oversee the planning and conduct of congresses at various levels, ensuring strict compliance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. Gombe emphasized the importance of these committees in enforcing constitutional compliance, implementing congress guidelines, and upholding electoral regulations.
The ADC chairman also used the occasion to reject a statement attributed to Hon. Leke Joseph Abijide, which expressed support for President Tinubu’s re-election. Gombe stated that this statement does not reflect the party’s position as a determined opposition party. He reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to being a strong force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The chairman of the Congress Committee for the North-West geopolitical zone, Abimikun Monday, described the inauguration as a significant step towards repositioning the party. He assured the party’s leadership of the committee’s readiness to deliver on its mandate, which includes overseeing the planning and execution of zonal, state, and local government congresses.
The Kaduna State Chairman of the ADC, Sani Aliyu Mohammed, pledged the party’s determination to win power through democratic means. He expressed the party’s commitment to effective organization and success, from the state level to local governments. Mohammed thanked party members for their support and assured them of the leadership’s commitment to delivering on the mandate entrusted to the committees.
The ADC’s move to strengthen its internal structures and distance itself from President Tinubu’s re-election bid is significant in Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country prepares for the 2027 elections, the ADC’s efforts to build a credible opposition platform are likely to have implications for the political landscape. With its commitment to justice, equity, and fairness, the ADC is positioning itself as a viable alternative for voters seeking change.
