The Centre for 21st Century Issues has congratulated the winners of the February 25 presidential and parliamentary elections, noting that democracy is taking root in Nigeria. Executive Director of the non‑governmental organisation, Ms. Gbemisola Akosa, hailed the victory of the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, describing it as a triumph for progressive forces across the country. She praised the poll as one of the most competitive in Nigeria’s history.
In a statement on behalf of her organisation, Akosa called on all aggrieved candidates to embrace peace by taking their grievances to the courts rather than resorting to self‑help. “We are glad that the much‑anticipated general election, covering both the presidential and National Assembly contests, has concluded with winners and losers emerging for the available positions,” she wrote. “We at 21st Century Issues are particularly delighted that the elections proceeded smoothly without any serious security breaches. Recognising that elections are highly emotional, we urge those dissatisfied with the outcome to approach the courts.”
Akosa also urged winners at all levels not to take their victories for granted. She appealed to President‑elect Bola Tinubu to see himself as a father of the nation, not merely a victor in the states he won, and to replicate the progressive and developmental strides he achieved in Lagos at the federal level. She expressed confidence that the country is in safe hands under Tinubu’s leadership, declaring that a new dawn has arrived in Nigeria and that “no serious politician will any longer joke with the electorate.”
The lawyer‑turned‑environmental activist lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission for delivering a transparent and credible election that reflected the will of Nigerians. “I am particularly delighted that democracy and democratic practices are beginning to take root in Nigeria. This must be noticed and commended by all. Nigeria is coming of age in its democratic journey, and we are happy with that, considering the numerous upsets witnessed during the elections,” she concluded.
