Mr. Kelvin Chukwu, the younger brother of the late Oyibo Chukwu, has been selected as the Labour Party’s candidate for the Enugu East senatorial zone election scheduled for March 11. Oyibo was assassinated on February 22, just 72 hours before the presidential and National Assembly elections, when he was shot and burned on Amaechi‑Agbani Road in Enugu metropolis at about 7:20 p.m. while returning from a campaign.

Chukwu secured the LP senatorial nomination in a by‑election primary held on Sunday in Enugu, receiving 223 votes and defeating three rivals: Mr. Uchenna Ogbodo, Mr. Chinedu Nneji, and Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa. The results were announced in the presence of two Independent National Electoral Commission observers. LP National Vice Chairman (South‑East) Innocent Okeke declared Chukwu the new flag bearer for the Enugu East senatorial zone, noting that his opponents received no votes.

Earlier, LP state Chairman Casmir Agbo praised the 231 delegates drawn from the 77 wards in the senatorial district for their resilience and support. In response, Chukwu pledged to fulfill all the dreams of his late brother and to make the people of the district proud, adding that his family has yet to recover from the gruesome killing of his elder brother and his personal aide.
