France’s capital, Paris, has been severely impacted by a cold snap that has disrupted both air and road travel. Around 100 flights were cancelled at Charles‑de‑Gaulle airport and a further 40 at Orly, according to Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot, who attributed the cancellations to snowfall and freezing temperatures. The disruptions were anticipated; Tabarot said on Tuesday that he hoped the situation would return to normal by the afternoon. However, the cold snap has persisted, with 38 of France’s 96 mainland departments placed on alert for heavy snow and black ice.
Météo‑France reported that three to seven centimetres of snow have already accumulated and described the cold snap as “of rare intensity for the season.” As a result, all public bus services in Paris and its surrounding suburbs were suspended because of icy roads. While most metro and suburban rail lines continued to operate, authorities warned residents in the Paris region to avoid unnecessary travel and to work from home if possible.
The extreme weather has already claimed six lives in weather‑related accidents, making it Europe’s bitterest cold snap so far this winter. The French government is taking measures to mitigate the effects, with Transport Minister Tabarot working to restore normalcy to the transport system. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates are being provided to the public as necessary.
Météo‑France has highlighted the severity of the cold snap, warning of “rare magnitude” weather conditions and urging people to take precautions and follow safety guidelines. Residents are advised to exercise caution, follow official guidance, and stay informed as the situation continues to unfold.
