Wike denies Ohanaeze membership claims good Igbo relationship

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has emphasized his good relationship with the Igbo people, while also clarifying his own ethnic identity. Speaking during a ‘thank you’ tour to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike stated that he is not a member of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organization.

Wike criticized the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Mbata, for referring to the Ikwerre people as Igbos. The Ikwerre people have reportedly declared Mbata persona non grata due to this comment. Wike believes that Mbata’s goal in becoming President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo was to gain access to Southeast governors and secure contracts.

The Minister also dismissed Mbata’s endorsement of Governor Sim Fubara’s bid for a second term, stating that Mbata does not speak for the Ikwerre people. Wike reaffirmed his identity as an Ikwerre man and emphasized that he will not claim a different identity. He noted that Mbata’s actions, including a property dispute, have led to him being ostracized by the Ikwerre community.

Wike’s comments highlight the complexities of ethnic identity and politics in Nigeria. The country has a diverse population with over 250 ethnic groups, and issues of identity and representation can be contentious. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a prominent socio-cultural organization that represents the interests of the Igbo people, one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups.

The Minister’s statement also underscores the importance of understanding and respecting the diversity of ethnic identities in Nigeria. By emphasizing his own identity as an Ikwerre man, Wike is highlighting the need for accuracy and sensitivity in representing different ethnic groups. The incident also raises questions about the role of socio-cultural organizations in Nigerian politics and the potential for conflicts between different groups.

In the context of Nigerian politics, Wike’s comments are significant as they highlight the complex web of ethnic alliances and rivalries that shape the country’s political landscape. As a prominent politician, Wike’s statements are closely watched and can have significant implications for political relationships and alliances. The incident is likely to have repercussions for the relationships between the Ikwerre people, the Igbo people, and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo organization.
