Africa Cup of Nations fills stadiums and fan zone in Morocco

The Africa Cup of Nations has drawn nearly one million spectators to nine stadiums across Morocco since its commencement on December 21. In addition to the stadium attendees, tens of thousands of fans have been following the tournament at a fan zone located on the international campus of Riad, an upscale district in the country’s capital, Rabat. This fan zone, which spans 5,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 50,000 spectators, has proven to be particularly popular among students and younger fans.

The fan zone offers an affordable alternative for students to engage with the tournament without incurring the cost of stadium tickets. Lassine Yarro, a Malian student, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, stating that it allows him to follow matches in a peaceful atmosphere. With approximately 20,000 African postgraduates from 47 countries studying in Moroccan universities and high schools, according to statistics from the Moroccan Foreign Affairs Ministry, the fan zone has become a hub for fans to bond with supporters from across the continent.

The Africa Cup of Nations has brought together 24 countries, with many fans traveling to Morocco to support their teams. Ahmed Tijani, a student from Senegal, noted that the fan zone has created a sense of community among fans from different countries, stating that it feels like being at home while watching the matches with Moroccans and people from other countries. This sentiment highlights the role of the fan zone in fostering relationships among African nations.

The fan zone will continue to operate until the AFCON final on Sunday, providing fans with an opportunity to enjoy the remaining games. The initiative has not only enhanced the tournament experience for students and younger fans but also promoted a sense of unity and camaraderie among fans from diverse backgrounds. As the Africa Cup of Nations reaches its climax, the fan zone is expected to remain a popular destination for fans seeking to engage with the tournament in a vibrant and inclusive environment. With its unique blend of entertainment, community, and cultural exchange, the fan zone has become an integral part of the tournament’s appeal.
