Heavy rainfall has caused significant disruptions within Kruger National Park, prompting South African National Parks (SANParks) to issue warnings to visitors about blocked routes and potential safety risks. The park has experienced substantial damage to travel routes, restricting access between camps, with guests at Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge rest camps currently unable to reach the Skukuza area.
According to SANParks spokesperson Rey Thakhuli, rising water levels have rendered some roads unsafe, and with more rain expected, visitors are advised to exercise caution and follow instructions from park officials at all times. Weather experts from Vox Weather report that approximately 300 millimeters of rain have fallen over the eastern escarpment in the past three days, with the heaviest downpours expected in Limpopo from Tuesday to Wednesday, and then moving into Mpumalanga from Thursday to Friday.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that there is currently only one exit route out of the park, via the Crocodile River bridge. SANParks has warned that if river levels continue to rise, the bridge may become unsafe or unusable, potentially stranding visitors inside the park until water levels recede. As a precautionary measure, guests have been advised to adjust their travel plans and delay moving between camps.
SANParks has already contacted visitors with upcoming bookings, particularly those planning to enter through affected gates or stay at affected camps, and has advised them to reschedule their visits until conditions improve. The organization has emphasized that safety remains the top priority as the heavy rain continues to impact the park.
