Nigeria Power Restored to Taraba State After Upgrade

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored electricity supply to Taraba State after completing upgrade works on the Yola–Mayo Belwa–Jalingo transmission line. The restoration of power supply to Jalingo and surrounding areas was confirmed on Wednesday, following the completion of all necessary pre-commissioning tests and a mandatory soak period, in line with standard operational procedures.

The upgrade works, which began with a planned outage on January 9, 2026, at 2:16 pm, were undertaken to enable the installation of new 150MVA power transformers at the Jalingo and Mayo Belwa Transmission Substations. As part of the project, the Gombe–Yola transmission line was temporarily opened on January 11, 2026, to facilitate line bay extension and transfer works at the Yola Transmission Substation, ensuring the safe execution of the upgrade.

The upgrade of the Mayo Belwa and Jalingo Transmission Substations from 132kV to 330kV is expected to significantly enhance power reliability and increase transmission capacity in Taraba State and neighboring areas. The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) is a major beneficiary of the project, which aims to support the rising electricity demand in the region.

According to TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company appreciates the patience of electricity consumers during the outage and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the national transmission grid. The successful completion of the upgrade works demonstrates TCN’s efforts to deliver reliable and efficient power supply across the country.

The restoration of power supply to Taraba State is a significant development, as it will enhance the overall electricity supply in the region. The upgrade of the transmission infrastructure is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, as it will provide a more reliable and stable power supply to homes, businesses, and industries. With the completion of this project, TCN has taken a significant step towards achieving its goal of strengthening the national transmission grid and improving power supply in Nigeria.
