The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan to facilitate maintenance works on the Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos-Badagry carriageway. According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the rehabilitation work will commence on January 19 and is expected to last for 18 weeks, concluding on May 28.
The maintenance work will be carried out in phases, with the preliminary phase starting from January 24 to January 30. The subsequent phases will cover the entire stretch of the bridge on both the service and toll lanes, with specific dates allocated for each phase. To minimize disruptions, traffic will be managed through strategic diversions between the toll lane, BRT lane, and service lane, ensuring that the bridge is not fully closed at any point.
During the rehabilitation work, motorists can expect temporary and partial closures of the bridge on both the inbound and outbound Lagos-Badagry carriageway. Traffic will be redirected along designated diversion routes, with clear signage and instructions from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officers to ensure smooth movement.
For phases one and two, Badagry-bound traffic will be redirected to the BRT corridor during toll lane repairs, while phases three and four will see vehicular traffic continue on the service lane, with temporary redirection to one of the two available lanes as vehicles approach the work zone. Similarly, during phases five and six, Lagos-bound traffic will be diverted to the BRT corridor while repairs are carried out on the toll lane.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of following traffic signs and instructions from relevant authorities to ensure a seamless commute during the rehabilitation phases. The maintenance work is expected to improve the overall condition of the Mazamaza Bridge, enhancing the safety and efficiency of the Lagos-Badagry carriageway.
The Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to addressing the bridge’s maintenance needs is crucial, given the significant volume of traffic that utilizes the carriageway daily. By providing a detailed traffic diversion plan and ensuring that the bridge remains partially open throughout the rehabilitation period, the government aims to minimize disruptions to commuters and businesses that rely on this critical transportation artery. As the maintenance work progresses, motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and exercise patience to ensure a safe and smooth journey.
