Nigeria Vice President Shettima attends Guinea inauguration ceremony

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of President-elect Mamady Doumbouya. The event, scheduled for Saturday at the GLC Stadium in Nongo, marks the formal end of a four-year military transition in Guinea following Doumbouya’s victory in the December 2025 general elections.

According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice-President, Shettima was received by senior Guinean government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic corps upon arrival. The Vice President’s attendance at the inauguration underscores Nigeria’s commitment to the restoration of constitutional order in the sub-region and its leadership role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The inauguration of President Doumbouya is significant as it signals the return to democratic governance in Guinea. Nigeria, under President Tinubu’s leadership, has been a strong advocate for democratic governance as a prerequisite for regional prosperity. The country has continued to position itself as a stabilizing force in the sub-region, promoting peace and stability through various initiatives.

The Vice President’s visit to Guinea also serves as a strategic mission to expand the economic corridor between the two West African nations. This move is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and foster economic cooperation between Nigeria and Guinea. With Nigeria being a key player in the ECOWAS, the visit reinforces the country’s commitment to regional integration and cooperation.

The inauguration ceremony is expected to be attended by dignitaries from across the region, and Shettima’s presence will reaffirm Nigeria’s support for the new government in Guinea. As the sub-region continues to navigate the challenges of democratic governance and economic development, Nigeria’s leadership role is expected to play a significant part in shaping the future of West Africa. With the inauguration of President Doumbouya, Guinea is poised to embark on a new path, and Nigeria’s support will be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition to democratic rule.
