Nigeria Power Outage Scheduled for Sokoto Maintenance

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has announced a planned power outage in parts of Sokoto metropolis to facilitate scheduled maintenance at the Sokoto Transmission Substation. The maintenance, aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring the reliability of the power system, will be conducted on January 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

According to Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, the company will perform annual preventive maintenance on the 30/40MVA power transformer. During this period, the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to receive bulk electricity from the affected transformer, resulting in a power interruption for customers in certain areas of Sokoto town. The affected areas include Sama Road, Abuja Road, Gagi area, Minanata area, Old Airport, and the Army Barracks.

The planned maintenance is a necessary step to ensure the safety and efficient operation of transmission equipment supplying electricity to the affected areas. TCN has apologized to electricity consumers for the inconvenience the outage may cause and has appealed for understanding as efforts are made to enhance power system performance. The company’s proactive approach to maintenance is crucial in preventing potential faults and minimizing downtime, thereby providing a more reliable electricity supply to consumers.

The transmission substation plays a vital role in Nigeria’s power infrastructure, and regular maintenance is essential to maintain its operability. TCN’s commitment to maintaining its equipment and infrastructure is in line with its mission to provide efficient and reliable electricity transmission services. As the company continues to work towards improving the nation’s power supply, such planned outages are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the power system.

The power outage is expected to last for eight hours, and TCN has assured customers that the maintenance work will be completed within the scheduled timeframe. The company will work to restore power as soon as possible, minimizing the disruption to customers’ daily activities. With the planned maintenance, TCN aims to improve the overall performance of the power system, providing a more stable and reliable electricity supply to consumers in Sokoto and surrounding areas.
