Lagos State Governor Condemns Reckless Behavior at Fuel Leak Scene
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has denounced the actions of residents who risked their lives to scoop fuel from an overturned tanker at Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, describing the behavior as dangerous and irresponsible. The incident highlights the importance of prioritizing public safety, particularly in emergency situations.
On Monday, the governor expressed concern over the blatant disregard for safety protocols, warning that such actions could result in loss of lives. He commended the swift response of emergency responders and security agencies, including the police, for securing the scene and preventing further danger. The governor cautioned residents against repeating such conduct, emphasizing that public safety must take precedence over material gain.
The governor also addressed the issue of indiscipline, specifically the problem of indiscriminate waste disposal, including the dumping of refuse on road medians. He announced that tougher sanctions would be enforced this year, with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) directed to apprehend offenders as a deterrent to others.
In a separate development, the governor provided clarification on the ongoing demolition exercise in Makoko, stating that residents affected by structures located near high-tension power lines had been issued evacuation notices more than two years prior to the exercise. He reassured affected residents that they would receive support in the form of palliatives and relocation assistance.
