The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to reclaiming its status as Africa’s largest political party, with a focus on returning to its winning ways. This was stated by Turaki, a member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), after a closed-door meeting with former Vice President Namadi Sambo. The meeting was described as an essential step in introducing new NWC members to Sambo and briefing him on the party’s prospects and challenges following its recently held National Convention in Ibadan.
Sambo provided guidance and advice on repositioning the party as a formidable winning platform, according to Turaki. He assured the party that he would remain a member and become more active in the near future, offering his support and attention whenever needed. Turaki expressed confidence that with the backing of the party’s founding fathers, the PDP is on course to win upcoming elections, including the FCT Area Council polls and the off-season governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.
The party has already zoned its presidential ticket to the Southern part of Nigeria, and while the specific candidate has not been decided, Turaki maintained that the process would be open, transparent, fair, and equitable. He emphasized that the party’s decision on its presidential candidate would ultimately be decided by the Nigerian people.
In reaction to the dismissal of Samuel Anyanwu’s case at the FCT High Court, Turaki described the judgment as a vindication for the PDP, reinforcing the principle that the judiciary should not interfere in internal party matters. The party has fulfilled all necessary legal filings in its various court cases and is currently waiting for the President of the Court of Appeal to decide on the next steps.
The PDP’s efforts to reposition itself come after a period of challenges, including internal conflicts and electoral losses. The party’s National Convention in Ibadan marked a significant step towards reconciliation and rebuilding, with the newly elected NWC working to strengthen the party’s structures and prepare for upcoming elections. As the party moves forward, its ability to leverage the support of its founding fathers and maintain a commitment to transparency and fairness will be crucial in determining its success.
