The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has announced a change in the date of the proposed Igbo Thanksgiving Day, which will now be held on the last Saturday of every year, instead of Sunday. This decision was made following a request by the Igbo College of Bishops, prompting the National Executive Committee (NEC) to modify two resolutions adopted at the Imeobi meeting of December 23, 2025.
According to Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the National Publicity Secretary, the event has been renamed Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day and will be observed on the last Saturday of January every year. The modifications, which are spiritually driven, will be formally presented to the next Imeobi meeting scheduled before the end of the first quarter of 2026.
On the designated day, all churches in Igbo land will observe adoration and prayers from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The NEC also approved a nine-man committee, chaired by Deputy President General, Mr. Okey Nwadinobi, to define modalities and terms of reference for standing committees. The committee’s establishment is part of the organization’s efforts to promote unity, spiritual upliftment, and collective advancement of the Igbo nation.
The meeting, which was presided over by President General, Senator Azuta Mbata, was attended by all 16 NEC members, as well as representatives of the Igbo College of Bishops, including Archbishops David Onuoha and Sosthenes Eze. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide remains committed to the wellbeing of the Igbo nation and will continue to work towards its advancement.
The change in date and the establishment of the new committee demonstrate the organization’s willingness to adapt and respond to the needs of its members. The Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day is expected to become an important event in the Igbo calendar, promoting unity and spiritual reflection among the Igbo people. With its new date and format, the event is likely to attract widespread participation and support from Igbo communities around the world.
