PDP Chairman Says 2025 Was ‘Testing Period’ as Court Ruling Vindicates Leadership
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) endured a difficult year of internal conflict in 2025, but a recent court judgement has now validated the leadership of its National Caretaker Committee, Chairman Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed has stated.
Speaking at the party’s 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, Mohammed acknowledged that the party faced severe trials. He credited NEC members for upholding constitutional procedures and the rule of law despite provocations, stating their actions placed the party’s survival above personal interests.
The core of the internal challenge, Mohammed explained, stemmed from actions by some senior members who bypassed established due process, exposing the party to significant judicial and institutional risks. He asserted that the party did not collapse but was instead “refined and strengthened.”
A key development, he noted, was the recent Federal High Court judgement in Ibadan, which declared a parallel factional convention—the “Ibadan Convention”—null and void. Mohammed said this ruling provided essential legal clarity and “existential credibility” for the PDP as currently constituted under his chairmanship and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
The NEC meeting, held at the start of 2026, focused on unity and moving forward. Mohammed’s address framed the court victory as a definitive resolution to the previous year’s leadership crisis, positioning the party to consolidate ahead of future political engagements. The outcome reinforces the caretaker committee’s authority and signals a return to institutional discipline within one of Nigeria’s major political parties.
