Political Appointees Resign in Nigeria’s Kano State, Citing Solidarity with Opposition Leader

Several political appointees in Nigeria’s Kano State have resigned from their positions, an action praised by the opposition Kwankwasiyya Movement as a demonstration of principle. The resignations are a show of solidarity with the movement’s leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of the state and a prominent political figure.

In a statement, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, through its spokesperson Habibu Sale Mohammed, Ph.D., commended former commissioners, special advisers, special assistants, managing directors, and other political office holders for their decisions. The statement acknowledged that these individuals voluntarily relinquished significant benefits and privileges. “These decisions, taken with full awareness of the significant benefits being relinquished, stand as a powerful testament to integrity, conviction, and selfless service,” the statement read.

The development follows earlier advice from Senator Kwankwaso himself, who had reportedly urged those considering resignation to reconsider. According to the Movement’s statement, Kwankwaso emphasized that governance should be about service, not political conflict. However, those who resigned maintained that their personal convictions were incompatible with the policies and directives of the current state government led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The statement also praised the steadfastness of other elected officials, including the Deputy Governor, senators, state assembly members, and local councillors, for resisting what it described as inducements and pressures to abandon their mandates. “Your firmness reinforces public confidence in representative democracy and principled leadership,” the spokesperson stated.

For those political appointees who remain in office, the Movement urged professionalism, civility, and restraint. It specified that this applied to individuals on transitional assignments or with genuine personal reasons for staying. The statement warned against any utterances or actions that could harm, intimidate, or undermine Senator Kwankwaso or the movement, assuring that goodwill would be extended to those who act responsibly.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement asserted that it remains united and focused amid the political developments in Kano State, a key region in northern Nigeria. The statement concluded by suggesting that history would judge favorably those who stood firm during this period.

The resignations highlight the ongoing political tension in Kano State between supporters of the current administration and the Kwankwasiyya faction loyal to Senator Kwankwaso, a rival of Governor Ganduje. The event underscores the personal and political allegiances shaping governance and opposition in the state.
