Robert Mugabe’s Son Arrested After Shooting Guard in Hyde Park

Bellarmine Mugabe Arrested After Security Guard Shot at Johannesburg Home

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested following the shooting of a security guard at a property in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. The incident has left the guard fighting for his life in hospital.

According to police, the shooting occurred after an argument at the residence on Tuesday. Bellarmine Mugabe allegedly shot the guard during the dispute. He was apprehended at the scene. Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting and found the security guard in a critical condition. He was rushed to a hospital where he remains, as confirmed by police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

Initial reports indicated that a man, later identified as Bellarmine Mugabe, barricaded himself inside a room after the shooting, refusing to exit. This prompted the deployment of police hostage negotiators to the property. The negotiators successfully secured his surrender and arrest without further incident.

The Hyde Park property is understood to be linked to the Mugabe family. This connection has drawn significant attention to the case, though police have stated that the investigation is focused on the shooting itself. Full details regarding the precise cause of the argument leading to the shooting have not been released by authorities.

Bellarmine Mugabe, 32, is a figure who has previously been in the public eye, often for controversies unrelated to his father’s political legacy. His father, Robert Mugabe, ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years until his ouster in 2017 and died in 2019. His rule was marked by both liberation hero status and later, widespread allegations of human rights abuses and economic mismanagement.

Police have confirmed that Bellarmine Mugabe is in custody. However, they have not yet indicated whether formal charges will be laid or when he is scheduled to appear in court. The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, including the ballistic evidence and the sequence of events, remains ongoing.

The case now moves into the judicial process, where the allegations against Mugabe will be formally addressed. The condition of the injured security guard continues to be a primary concern for investigators. The incident has also raised questions about security at the upscale residential property and the events that precipitated the violent altercation.
