Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has recommended the club pursue Newcastle United midfielders Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes to replace the departing Casemiro. Saha, speaking to The Mirror, described both players as “midfield monsters” capable of effectively filling the Brazilian’s role.
Casemiro will leave Manchester United as a free agent upon the expiration of his contract this summer, ending a three-year stint at Old Trafford. While the 32-year-old has been a pivotal figure, his impending departure creates a significant gap in United’s central midfield, prompting scrutiny of potential successors.
Saha emphasized the specific attributes required in a replacement. “Man United need aggressiveness and a player who will dictate the midfield like [Sandro] Tonali or [Bruno] Guimaraes,” he stated. “They are two monsters in midfield and have the experience and vision to manage the transition when Casemiro leaves.” Saha also acknowledged Casemiro’s quality, noting, “I have always been a big fan of Casemiro. Casemiro has proved he is a world-class player, and I understand why Man United fans want him to stay.”
Both recommended targets are established Premier League midfielders currently under contract with Newcastle United. Sandro Tonali, 24, returned to England last season after a loan spell from AC Milan and has become a key player for the Magpies, known for his box-to-box energy and technical skill. Bruno Guimaraes, 26, has been a cornerstone for Newcastle since his 2022 transfer, celebrated for his defensive work rate, passing range, and leadership.
The commentary arrives as Manchester United’s recruitment team plans for the upcoming summer transfer window. Finding a suitable successor to Casemiro—who provided defensive solidity and tempo control—is widely regarded as a priority to strengthen the midfield alongside existing players like Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte.
Saha’s suggestions highlight a trend toward targeting physically robust, technically proficient midfielders from within the Premier League. Securing either Tonali or Guimaraes would likely require a substantial transfer fee, given their contracts and current club status. The move would signal United’s intent to immediately reinforce a critical position following the loss of an experienced international.
The club’s final decision will depend on various factors, including budget, manager Erik ten Hag’s tactical preferences, and the players’ own ambitions. However, the endorsement from a former United forward underscores the perceived necessity of adding a dynamic, controlling presence to the squad’s core as they aim to improve their league standing and compete across multiple fronts next season.
