By-election Results a Referendum on Tinubu Presidency, APC

The Lagos State chapter of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has characterized victories in recent by-elections across Rivers, Kano, and the Federal Capital Territory as a public endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesman Mogaji Seye Oladejo declared the outcomes a “clear and unmistakable referendum” on Tinubu’s leadership and the party’s policy direction. The APC candidates’ wins, he stated, reaffirm public confidence in the federal government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and ongoing economic and infrastructural reforms.

The statement highlighted the by-elections as a rejection of opposition criticism, suggesting voters recognized “bold leadership, economic reforms, infrastructural expansion, and institutional strengthening.” It further contended that social media activism did not translate into ballot-box success, asserting that “democracy is ultimately decided by voters, not virtual trends.”

Looking ahead, the APC suggested the results indicate strong prospects for the party in the 2027 general elections, describing the momentum as a “reflection of trust earned through decisive leadership and courageous reforms.”

The party also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their professionalism during the electoral process, crediting them for ensuring a safe environment for voters. It praised its own members and volunteers for grassroots engagement that secured the victories.

The by-elections, held in three key geopolitical zones, are seen as an early test of public sentiment regarding Tinubu’s economic policies, including currency reforms and subsidy removal, which have been accompanied by periods of inflation and public hardship. The APC’s interpretation frames the results as validation of its governance approach, while opposition parties have yet to issue a unified response to the outcomes. The victories provide the ruling party with a morale boost heading into future electoral contests.
