The death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, representing the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, has been met with profound sorrow, with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike calling it a loss to the Ogoni people and Nigeria. The 64-year-old senator died last Thursday after a brief illness, leaving a void in regional politics.
Minister Wike, a prominent figure in Rivers State, led a delegation to London to condole with Mpigi’s widow, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and her children. The group included his sons, Jordan and Joaquin, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule, Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu, Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere, and Hon. Dum Deekor. Wike noted that elders like Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, Chief OCJ Okocha, and Sergeant Awuse intended to join but were hindered by age.
During the visit, Wike praised Mpigi as a steadfast ally, recalling their long association from council chairman days. “When he says he is your friend, he is your friend,” Wike said, emphasizing Mpigi’s reliability. He acknowledged the senator’s role as a strong pillar in Rivers State politics and lamented his untimely passing, adding, “We can’t question God.” Wike promised state support for a befitting burial, stating, “We will play our roles to ensure that he is accorded a befitting burial.”
Mrs. Mpigi thanked the delegation for their presence and support, expressing gratitude for their solidarity.
Senator Mpigi’s death resonates deeply within the Ogoni community, an ethnic group in Rivers State known for its environmental advocacy and oil resources. His legislative work and political influence were pivotal for the region. The commitment to a dignified funeral underscores his legacy as a dedicated public servant who stood by his friends and constituents.
As Rivers State leaders vow to honor his memory, Mpigi’s passing marks a significant moment in the state’s political landscape, highlighting the enduring impact of his service.
