The Federal Government of Nigeria has commissioned an integrated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling station at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State. The facility is a key component of national strategy to bolster domestic gas supply and accelerate the adoption of cleaner energy sources.
The inauguration was held at the university, with officials highlighting the project’s alignment with Nigeria’s energy transition objectives. Oluwole Adama, Executive Director of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, described the station as a significant advancement beyond mere infrastructure. “This project represents more than the commissioning of a refueling station. It symbolizes progress, partnership, and purpose in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition, promoting cleaner fuels, and deepening domestic gas utilization in line with national energy objectives,” Adama stated.
Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of OAU, expressed the institution’s support, noting the station will serve both the campus community and residents of surrounding areas. He emphasized the initiative’s academic value, stating it would create practical opportunities for student research, hands-on learning, and innovation in alternative energy solutions.
The government-backed project forms part of a broader push to increase renewable and cleaner energy adoption across Nigeria. By establishing refueling infrastructure at a major tertiary institution, the initiative aims to demonstrate the viability of CNG for transportation and other applications, thereby stimulating market confidence and domestic demand.
This development underscores Nigeria’s strategic focus on leveraging its vast gas resources to power economic growth while reducing environmental impact. The OAU station is anticipated to act as a pilot and educational model, potentially encouraging similar deployments nationwide as the country pursues its goals for a gas-led energy transition.
