Abia APC Condemns ADC Criticism Over Federal Govt Direction

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has issued a strong rebuttal to criticisms levelled against the federal government by former Senate President David Mark and leaders of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC). The exchange highlights the intensifying political discourse surrounding economic policy and electoral integrity in Nigeria.

The controversy stems from remarks made during the launch of the ADC’s membership mobilisation, registration, and revalidation exercise in Umuahia on Saturday. Representing the ADC National Chairman, the party’s National Welfare Secretary, Nkem Ukandu, asserted that the APC-led federal government lacks direction and has abandoned Nigerians amid the prevailing economic hardship.

In response, the Abia State APC Caucus accused Mark and the ADC of attempting to mislead the public with rhetorical political rallies. The party firmly rejected the narrative that the federal government is directionless, stating that Nigeria is “navigating complex reforms under the bold leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” According to the APC, these reforms are specifically aimed at stabilising the economy, strengthening the naira, boosting local production, and ensuring long-term sustainability.

The APC further contended that political figures with long tenures in national leadership should not seek to distance themselves from the structural issues that have accumulated over decades. On separate allegations regarding election manipulation, the Abia APC Caucus affirmed the party’s commitment to free, fair, and credible elections. It argued that competition should be based on ideas and performance, not unfounded accusations, and noted that institutions like the electoral commission and public finance auditors operate independently within constitutional bounds. The party suggested that sweeping claims of manipulation without evidence erode public trust.

This public confrontation between the ruling party in Abia and a prominent opposition figure underscores the deepening political divisions as the nation grapples with economic challenges and prepares for future electoral cycles. The exchange reflects a broader national debate over accountability, the legacy of past governance, and the pace of current economic reforms. Both parties are positioning themselves ahead of the next political contest, framing their narratives for public consumption amid significant socioeconomic pressures.
