Ogun State youth leader Oyejide Sunkanmi, widely known as SUCO, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to a report by the Media Talk Africa. The move, announced on Monday, concludes a 12-year affiliation with the PDP, where Sunkanmi served in various capacities within the Ogun State chapter.
In a resignation letter addressed to PDP State Chairman Abayomi Tella, Sunkanmi expressed gratitude for his political development within the party. He described his tenure as “remarkable and fulfilling” and specifically thanked several senior party figures, including Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu and Chief Robert Adenaike, for their support. Acknowledging potential disappointment, he wrote, “I humbly ask for your understanding. Decisions such as this are never taken lightly.” The letter did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure.
When contacted, Sunkanmi, who served as the PDP youth leader for the Ibara/Onisasa Ward 16 in Abeokuta North Local Government, confirmed his switch to the APC, citing “personal grounds” as the motivating factor.
Sunkanmi’s defection is notable given his active role as a youth leader in a key local government area within Ogun State. The PDP currently serves as the main opposition in the state, while the APC controls the governorship and state legislature. His move represents a gain for the ruling party at the grassroots level and underscores ongoing realignments within the state’s political landscape.
No official statements have been released by either the state PDP or APC leadership regarding the development. The transition highlights the fluid nature of party loyalty among Nigeria’s political class, often driven by individual circumstances and strategic calculations ahead of future electoral cycles. Sunkanmi’s case adds to a series of defections that continue to shape opposition dynamics in APC-dominated states like Ogun.
