Bandits in Niger State have killed five people, including a heavily pregnant woman, in the Rafi Local Government Area. The attackers entered the Agwa community on Tuesday afternoon, firing indiscriminately and killing their victims.
An eyewitness, Mallam Audu, told our correspondent that the bandits were still carrying out the assault when a military patrol engaged them in a gun battle. “The bandits just entered our village and started shooting. People ran for their lives, and about six people were killed,” he said. “While they were shooting, they also captured some people, but they had to flee the village when the soldiers arrived and opened fire.”
According to Audu, the soldiers’ fire forced the bandits to retreat into the forest. He added that more than 50 people were kidnapped and many villagers were injured while trying to escape.
The Niger State Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the incident, noting that the exact number of victims has yet to be determined.
