FUDMA Senate Rusticates 20 Students for Exam Malpractice

Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State has rusticated 20 students after a disciplinary panel found them guilty of examination malpractice. The decision, announced on Thursday, was ratified during the university’s 138th Regular Senate Meeting held on Wednesday.

The verdict followed a thorough investigation by the university’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee, which examined allegations of misconduct during examinations. According to a statement from the university’s Director of Information and Protocol, Nasiru Abdul, the Senate considered the committee’s report before reaching its conclusion.

University Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman, Professor Mohammed Khalid-Othman, affirmed that the action was taken in strict accordance with Section 13.3(c) of the institution’s policy on examination irregularities and academic misconduct. He emphasized that the process adhered to principles of due process, fairness, and justice, noting that all affected students were granted the opportunity to appear before the committee and present their defenses.

Professor Khalid-Othman commended the disciplinary committee for its diligence, stating that upholding academic integrity is non-negotiable. He explained that the rustication serves as a clear deterrent to students who might contemplate violating examination regulations. “The decision is meant to send a clear signal to all students to brace up and do the needful, while also serving as a deterrent to those who may wish to cut corners by violating the university’s rules and regulations on examination conduct,” he said.

Examination malpractice is a persistent challenge in higher education institutions globally, often undermining the credibility of academic qualifications. Nigerian universities, including FUDMA, have increasingly enforced stringent codes of conduct to safeguard academic standards. This sanction underscores the institution’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its assessment processes and degree awards.

The rustication, which typically involves suspension or expulsion for a specified period or permanently, reflects a broader trend among Nigerian universities to implement punitive measures against academic dishonesty. By publicizing the outcome, FUDMA aims to reinforce its regulatory framework and remind students of their obligations to uphold ethical scholarly conduct.

No further details regarding the specific nature of the malpractices or the duration of the rustication were provided in the statement. The university management has urged students to respect all academic regulations to avoid similar consequences. This action is expected to strengthen the culture of integrity within the campus community and support the credibility of the university’s academic programs.
