FG moves to launch food bank programme, sets up committee for nationwide rollout

The Federal Government has initiated a nationwide food support initiative by activating a steering committee to oversee its implementation across Nigeria. This development was announced on April 12, 2026, through an official statement from the Federal Ministry of Health. The committee convened for its inaugural meeting in Abuja, aiming to coordinate the National Community Food Bank Programme. During the meeting, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Muhammad Ali Pate emphasized the importance of prioritizing execution, stating that the program must deliver tangible benefits to vulnerable Nigerians. He remarked, “This Committee must ensure that implementation is not only coordinated, but effective. This is not about meetings, but about results that improve the lives of Nigerians.”

The initiative, led by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, seeks to address malnutrition and enhance food and nutrition support systems at the community level across the country’s 774 local government areas. The ministry’s statement indicated that the committee comprises representatives from key government institutions, including those responsible for humanitarian affairs, agriculture, women’s affairs, and health, as well as relevant agencies. The committee is tasked with providing oversight, ensuring coordination among stakeholders, and tracking progress as the program is rolled out nationwide.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to improve nutrition outcomes and reduce vulnerability, particularly among underserved communities. The Federal Government has announced that the program is scheduled for an official launch in Borno later in April, marking a significant step in its efforts to combat food insecurity and malnutrition in Nigeria.
