2027: Okowa moves to unseat Ned Nwoko, declares interest in Delta North Senatorial seat

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has officially announced his intention to run for a seat in the Nigerian Senate, representing the Delta North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections. Okowa, who served two terms as governor from 2015 to 2023, made this declaration on Monday as political activities ramp up ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle. The Senate seat he is targeting is currently occupied by Ned Nwoko, a billionaire businessman and husband of actress Regina Daniels, who secured the position under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023.

In a notable political shift, Okowa has aligned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant departure from his previous affiliation with the PDP, under which he ran as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. This decision to contest under the APC has already ignited discussions within Delta State, particularly given Okowa’s long-standing association with the PDP and his considerable influence in the state’s political arena.

The Delta North district, which includes the three local government areas of Oshimili North, Oshimili South, and Aniocha North, is regarded as a crucial battleground in state politics. Okowa’s entry into the race is expected to alter the dynamics of the contest, especially as he brings extensive governance experience and a robust political network to his campaign. Political analysts suggest that Okowa’s move may indicate broader realignments within Delta State’s political framework as the 2027 elections draw nearer.

His candidacy is poised to attract significant attention from both supporters and opponents, given his impressive track record as governor and his heightened national profile following the 2023 presidential campaign. As the election season approaches, stakeholders across the political spectrum are closely monitoring developments in Delta North, where the upcoming contest is anticipated to be fiercely competitive.
