Brad Holmes on Rueben Bain report: "We've known that for a while"

Draft prospect Rueben Bain has come under scrutiny following reports linking him to a fatal car crash in 2024. This news, which emerged on Sunday, has sparked criticism from some NFL insiders who claimed they had prior knowledge of the incident but chose not to disclose it publicly. On Monday, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes confirmed that the team had been aware of the situation for some time. “We’ve known that for a while, so that doesn’t really change anything from our standpoint,” Holmes stated, implying that other teams may also have been informed.

While this revelation does not seem to have affected internal evaluations, its public exposure could influence Bain’s draft positioning. Some NFL owners may feel uneasy about selecting him in an early round, which could result in him sliding down draft boards. This situation is reminiscent of Jalen Carter’s case in the 2023 draft. Despite being a top-five prospect, Carter was selected ninth overall by the Philadelphia Eagles, who showed no hesitation in choosing the two-time Pro Bowler and 2023 defensive rookie of the year finalist.

The lack of prior reporting on Bain’s involvement in the crash has raised questions about why those who were aware of the incident did not make it public. This development highlights the complex interplay between off-field issues and professional sports evaluations as the NFL draft approaches.
