The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his support for the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is currently overseeing the renovation of Wadata Plaza, the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. Renovation work commenced on Sunday, shortly after the police unsealed the facility, allowing access to the faction aligned with Wike. A reporter from the News Agency of Nigeria noted on Monday that while barricades around the main building had been removed, several police vehicles remained stationed nearby, with personnel still present.
The renovation efforts include painting, replacing air conditioners, changing locks and keys, and allocating offices to the newly appointed members of the NWC. A party member, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, indicated that staff had not yet resumed work but confirmed that renovation activities were in progress. He also mentioned that some staff loyal to the rival Tanimu Turaki-led NWC might be hesitant to return under the new leadership. At the time of reporting, no party officials had arrived at the secretariat.
On Saturday, the faction’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, announced the reopening of both the PDP national secretariat and the presidential campaign office at Legacy House in Maitama. In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed, it was stated that the unsealing was in compliance with “duly issued court orders” and that the property had been handed over to the Mohammed-led NWC, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu serving as national secretary. Mohammed praised the police for their professionalism and adherence to the rule of law but cautioned that the party would not tolerate any obstruction, disruption, or breaches of peace at the secretariat.
The Turaki-led faction has rejected this move, labeling it as contemptuous. Its spokesman, Ini Ememobong, stated that the judgment cited by the police was currently under appeal and that all parties had been duly informed. He warned that this action could undermine any forthcoming ruling from the Court of Appeal. This dispute underscores the ongoing internal divisions within the PDP, with rival factions asserting their legitimacy and control over party assets. The situation remains fluid as both sides await further legal and political developments.
