Lagos NMA calls for dully equipped PHCs with doctors

Ofem Enang, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Calabar and a presidential candidate in the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) election, has publicly rejected his disqualification by the National Officers’ Committee (NOC). During a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Enang characterized the disqualification as unconstitutional and a breach of the association’s constitution. He, along with fellow disqualified candidates Dr. Muhammad Isah and Dr. Sodipo Olanrewa, contended that the disqualification was based on technical administrative interpretations, particularly concerning the number of curriculum vitae copies submitted.

Enang emphasized that the NMA constitution does not empower the NOC to disqualify candidates on such grounds. He referenced Article 11(1b) of the NMA constitution, which states, “All members shall, subject to the provisions of Article 4 of this constitution, be eligible to contest elections to any office.” He argued that eligibility should be determined by constitutional criteria rather than administrative discretion, asserting that the disqualification reflects an overreach of authority that is inconsistent with due process.

The candidates called for strict adherence to the NMA constitution, fairness in the electoral process, and non-interference by the NOC. They urged doctors across Nigeria, as well as past presidents of the NMA and association chairmen, to defend the integrity of the professional body. Additionally, Dr. Isah and Dr. Olanrewa appealed to the Nigerian Police and the Federal Capital Territory Administration for intervention, warning that unresolved tensions within the NMA could escalate if the situation is not addressed promptly.

The disqualification has raised concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process and the potential for manipulation in favor of preferred candidates. The demands from the candidates underscore the necessity for transparency and adherence to constitutional provisions in the upcoming election.
