A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State has suspended two former governors, two ex-senators, and seven other party officials due to allegations of insubordination, anti-party activities, and unauthorized factionalization. The suspended former governors are Chief John Odigie Oyegun and Osareimen Osunbor. The two former senators affected by this decision are Yisa Braimah from Edo North and Ehigie Uzamere from Edo South. Additionally, the other suspended members include Nosa Ehima, a former Oredo local government chairman; Sylvester Ewanehi, a former state commissioner; Tony Alile, the newly elected state chairman; Jafaru Sumaila; Stella Alli; Igieogbe Asemota; and Christopher Ojeikere, the state publicity secretary.
A statement issued by Kennedy Odion, the factional state chairman, indicated that the suspensions followed a meeting of the State Executive Committee. Odion accused the suspended members of failing to comply with lawful party directives, engaging in anti-party activities, and acting in ways that contradict the ADC’s constitution and objectives. He further alleged that some of the suspended individuals had established parallel party structures, which could lead to disorder within the party. The State Executive Committee also claimed that the suspended members participated in unauthorized groups or caucuses that are not recognized by the party constitution.
As a result of their suspension, all affected individuals are barred from attending party meetings, activities, and decision-making processes. They are also prohibited from representing the party in any official or unofficial capacity and must refrain from presenting themselves as officers or agents of the ADC. The statement directed all party organs and structures to deny the suspended members recognition or operational access during the suspension period.
Odion noted that the allegations against each member would be formally communicated in writing to the State Disciplinary Committee, which will inform them of the hearing details. The suspended members will have the right to present a defense, be represented by counsel, and call witnesses. The proceedings are expected to conclude within the constitutionally prescribed timeline. Furthermore, the suspended members retain the right to appeal under Article 15(D) of the party constitution. Appeals must be filed within 14 days of receiving the notice and will be resolved within 21 days by the appropriate higher organ of the party.
Local Government Area and Ward Executives, along with affiliated structures, have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with this directive and to report any breaches to the State Executive Committee immediately. The suspension takes effect immediately.
