Alex Iwobi Reveals How Wenger Influenced Nigeria Decision Over England

Alex Iwobi has spoken openly about the pivotal moment he chose to represent Nigeria over England, a decision that shaped the trajectory of his international career. The Everton midfielder, who has since become a cornerstone of the Super Eagles, revealed that the choice came after careful consideration during a period when his opportunities with England’s youth teams had stalled.

Speaking on the Beast Mode On podcast, Iwobi recalled how former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger advised him to think deeply about his options, even suggesting he could delay committing to Nigeria in case England’s senior team came calling. At the time, Iwobi had progressed through England’s Under-16, Under-17, and Under-18 squads but found himself out of favour as regular first-team football at Arsenal eluded him.

His fortunes shifted when Nigeria approached him to join their Olympic squad. After consulting with his father and uncle, Iwobi accepted the invitation, intrigued by the prospect of representing his ancestral country. His first experiences with the Nigerian setup were eye-opening—basic facilities, hands-on training, and a passionate, familial atmosphere that immediately resonated with him. Despite the rudimentary conditions, he felt an undeniable sense of belonging.

The decisive moment came when he was called up for a senior international friendly against Egypt. Wenger gave him the autonomy to decide, respecting his personal connection to Nigeria. Iwobi chose to commit, later making his Super Eagles debut in October 2015 against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Belgium.

Since then, Iwobi has gone on to earn 98 caps and score 10 goals for Nigeria, establishing himself as one of the team’s most consistent performers. Reflecting on the contrast between playing for England and Nigeria, he noted the disciplined structure of the former and the vibrant, unpredictable spirit of the latter.

His journey underscores the complex decisions young players face when balancing heritage, opportunity, and national identity—and how a single choice can define a career on the international stage.
