Abia Inaugurates Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking, Protect Citizens

Abia State Government, in partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has inaugurated a dedicated task force to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable citizens from exploitation.

The Abia State Task Force Against Human Trafficking, chaired by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN, was formally launched in Umuahia. Governor Alex Otti, represented by Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, described the initiative as a strategic and urgent measure to strengthen the state’s response to trafficking and safeguard human dignity.

Governor Otti highlighted that trafficking networks are often intertwined with organized crime, including drug trafficking and transnational criminal syndicates. He noted the devastating impact on families and communities and called for a comprehensive approach that combines enforcement, rehabilitation, and reintegration of victims.

NAPTIP Director-General Mrs. Binta Adamu Bello noted that Abia becomes the 25th Nigerian state to establish a NAPTIP-supported task force, underscoring the growing national effort to address this global menace. She emphasized the importance of coordinated action to dismantle trafficking operations and support survivors.

Attorney-General Uwanna expressed confidence that the task force would prevent Abia from becoming a safe haven for traffickers and pledged full legal backing for its operations.

The establishment of the task force reflects a broader commitment to tackling human trafficking through multi-agency collaboration, victim support, and strengthened law enforcement. Officials stressed that sustained vigilance and community engagement will be essential to disrupt trafficking networks and uphold the rights of vulnerable populations in Abia State.
