APC Chieftain Hospitalised After Alleged Assault by Lawmaker in Ibadan

Hon. Gafar Oyebade, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, is currently receiving medical treatment after allegedly being assaulted during a party meeting at the APC State Secretariat in Oke Ado, Ibadan.

According to a statement issued on Monday, Oyebade said he was invited by the state party secretary, Hon. Fatai Adesina, to resolve a dispute over the conduct of the recent local government congress. He claimed that upon arrival, he found Hon. Olafisoye Akinmoyede, the member representing Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency, already present alongside other party members.

Oyebade alleged that tensions escalated during the meeting, leading to a physical altercation in which he was beaten and verbally threatened. He said the incident occurred in the presence of state party executives and that he has since reported the matter to the Iyaganku State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Ibadan.

“I was invited by the State Secretary of APC, Hon. Fatai Adeshina, on April 20, 2026, to the party secretariat,” Oyebade stated. “The meeting became heated, and I was assaulted in the presence of the state chairman and other executives. He even threatened to kill me, saying I was trying to hijack the party from him.”

However, Akinmoyede has denied the allegations, describing the meeting as a peaceful attempt to resolve internal party disputes. In a statement released through his legislative aide, Dr. Isiaq Akintunde, the lawmaker said no physical assault took place.

“The gathering was convened by the state chairman to clarify Mr. Gafar’s official role, as he claimed to be the party secretary despite records showing he was the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Lagelu Local Government APC,” Akintunde said.

The incident has sparked concern within the party, with calls for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and maintain party unity ahead of future electoral activities.
