Nigeria Revenue Service Busts False Vehicle Tax Infographic

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has denied a viral infographic that claims a new vehicle tax took effect on 1 July. In a statement, NRS Special Adviser to Chairman Dr. Zach Adedeji, Dare Adekambi, said the graphic is false and misleading.

According to Adekambi, the unauthenticated infographic urges owners of private, commercial and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified “vehicle tax” online or at approved banks and agencies. The material also directs readers to http://www.firs.gov.ng for further information, a URL that belongs to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, not the NRS. The official NRS website is http://www.nrs.gov.ng.

The statement clarifies that the Federal Government has not introduced any new vehicle tax, contrary to what the graphic alleges. The NRS stressed that the information did not originate from the service or any other government agency.

Adekambi advised the public to rely exclusively on verified government channels for tax‑related information. “Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated messages designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” he said.

The NRS concluded that the infographic is categorically false. Nigerians are encouraged to follow the agency’s verified social‑media accounts and its website for accurate updates on tax matters and other activities.

The clarification comes amid a broader pattern of misinformation circulating online about fiscal policies in Nigeria. By debunking the claim, the NRS aims to prevent confusion among taxpayers and ensure that revenue collection processes remain transparent. Readers are urged to consult only official sources for confirmation of any new tax measures.
