Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested 45‑year‑old Semiu Adegesin for the death of three‑year‑old Esther Samuel. Adegesin was charged with “contributory negligence” after the child was killed with a Dane gun that he owned. According to investigators, Adegesin loaded the firearm and carelessly left it in an open area of his backyard, a place where children often played.
A 13‑year‑old boy, Ope Babalola, found the loaded gun, pointed it at Esther, and pulled the trigger. The girl was discovered in a pool of her own blood at the scene in Kukudi Village, Imasayi. She was rushed to General Hospital Ilaro, where the doctor on duty confirmed her death.
The arrest followed a report lodged at the Imasayi Divisional Headquarters. State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said the suspect was taken to the station for interrogation and that the case had been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a proper investigation.
Commissioner of Police Frank Mba expressed sympathy for the family, describing the incident as tragic. He assured the public that the Ogun State Police Command will ensure justice is served and urged calm while the investigation proceeds.
