Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Targets Agege House Seat 2027

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa is reportedly positioning himself for the House of Representatives seat that covers Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, sources said.

The move marks a departure from earlier reports that linked Obasa to a bid for the Lagos State governorship. In 2023 he was said to have travelled across the state, using the Mandate Group—a political outfit associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—to gauge support for a gubernatorial campaign.

According to insiders in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the governorship plan was shelved after the party’s top brass, reportedly led by Tinubu, selected Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate. Following that decision, Obasa explored other options, including a contest for the Lagos West senatorial seat held by incumbent Senator Idiat Adebule.

Party activists close to Adebule, however, opposed Obasa’s potential challenge, citing her status as a prominent female senator from the South‑West. Subsequent discussions with senior party leaders resulted in Tinubu advising Obasa to aim for a lower‑house seat instead. The speaker is now understood to be targeting the Agege Federal Constituency seat currently occupied by Wale Ahmed.

Sources said Obasa has begun low‑profile consultations with local stakeholders and grassroots outreach in Agege as part of early preparations for the 2027 elections. The shift reflects broader realignments within the Lagos APC as senior figures reposition themselves ahead of the next national polls.

If Obasa secures the APC nomination, his candidacy could alter the competitive dynamics in Agege, a constituency that has traditionally been a stronghold for the party. The development will be closely watched as the Lagos political landscape continues to evolve in the run‑up to the 2027 general elections.
