Delta State – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urged the public on Friday to disregard reports of a leadership vacuum within the party. In a statement sent to Media Talk Africa, PDP Publicity Secretary Chief Kingsley Akpos Oturubo affirmed that the party’s leadership is legally recognised and that internal disputes have been resolved.
Oturubo called on party members who intend to contest the 2027 general elections under the PDP banner to continue their campaign activities. “There is no cause for alarm,” he said, adding that the party’s leadership, headed by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, “has come to stay” following validation by the apex court.
The statement referenced the Supreme Court judgment delivered on 30 April 2026, which settled the long‑running leadership controversy that had divided the PDP. The court invalidated the Ibadan Convention that produced the rival Aminu Turaki‑led faction, effectively ending the factional crisis. The judgment also upheld the suspension of Senator Sam Anyanwu and three others, which had been imposed by the PDP’s 608th National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on 1 November 2025. The one‑month suspension expired on 1 December 2025, after which the suspended members were appointed to the Caretaker National Working Committee on 8 December 2025.
The caretaker committee organised the March 2026 convention recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The convention produced the current leadership, with Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed as NWC chairman and Senator Mao Ohuabunwa heading the Board of Trustees (BoT). Both the BoT and the NWC are listed on the INEC portal, which the party urged Deltans to consult for verification.
The PDP reiterated its appeal to any aggrieved members to “sheath their swords” and rejoin the party. Oturubo appealed to former members who left during the internal crisis, inviting them to return to what he described as their “original family.” He expressed confidence that the party would contest all available seats in the 2027 elections – governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly – and secure victories with the support of the Delta electorate.
The party’s statement seeks to clarify the current leadership structure, counter misinformation, and present a united front as it prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
