Nollywood Star Oby Kechere, Aki Na Ukwa Actress, Dies at 44

Nigerian actress and film director Oby Kechere, best known for her role as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, died on 27 April 2026 after a prolonged illness, the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) announced on Saturday.

Uche Agbo, National President of the DGN, confirmed the loss in a statement released by the guild. “It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter,” the statement read. “We were informed yesterday that she passed on Monday, 27 April 2026, after a prolonged illness.”

Madam Cecilia, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, was recognised as a committed professional and a valued member of the guild. Her contributions to the growth and unity of the DGN, particularly within the Abuja Chapter, were highlighted as “never to be forgotten.” The National Executive Council and the broader DGN family extended condolences to Kechere’s family, friends, and colleagues, wishing her “gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Born in Mbaise, Imo State, Kechere entered the Nigerian film industry—commonly referred to as Nollywood—in 2001. She made her debut in the popular “August‑Meeting” movies, quickly establishing herself as a versatile performer. Over the next two decades she built a reputation as both an actress and a director, appearing in numerous television series and films that contributed to Nollywood’s expanding global presence.

Kechere’s portrayal of the memorable Ms Koi Koi in Aki na Ukwa remains a cultural touchstone, cementing her status among the generation of actors who helped define early 2000s Nigerian comedy. In addition to her on‑screen work, she served as Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter, where she championed professional development and advocated for stronger industry standards.

The DGN will hold a memorial service for Kechere at a later date, with details to be communicated to members and the public. Her passing marks the loss of a prominent figure in Nollywood and a respected leader within the filmmakers’ guild. Media Talk Africa will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on tributes and related events.
