The opening weeks of the 2026 NFL league year were marked by the Baltimore Ravens’ decision to withdraw from a proposed trade for Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, a move that reverberated beyond the two franchises. On Tuesday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show, Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht explained how the collapse of the deal also affected Tampa’s draft strategy and roster construction.
The Buccaneers selected edge‑rusher Rueben Bain with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Licht indicated that, had the Ravens‑Raiders trade been completed, the draft order would have shifted and Tampa’s position could have changed. The trade would have sent the 14th pick to the Raiders, creating an immediate need for quarterback‑coach John Spytek, who had been targeting a pass‑rush specialist in a post‑Crosby scenario. Instead, the pick remained in Baltimore.
Spytek had simultaneously been negotiating the signing of former Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum. With Linderbaum’s contract pending, the Ravens faced a pressing need on the offensive line at the 14th spot, while their requirement for an edge rusher lessened after the signing of Trey Hendrickson. Consequently, Baltimore selected guard Vega Ioane, a decision that satisfied its interior line needs.
Licht reflected on the series of events, noting that the failed trade indirectly benefited Tampa Bay. “When the Raiders‑Ravens deal fell through, it gave us a clearer path,” he said. “I was concerned the Raiders might have used that pick to bolster their pass rush, which would have left the Ravens with another edge‑rusher target and put us at a disadvantage. The Ravens opted for Vega, an excellent pick for their line, and that opened the door for us to secure Rueben Bain.”
He added that the Buccaneers had shown early interest in Hendrickson before the player agreed to terms with Baltimore, but the final roster moves left Tampa with a “shiny new toy” at the top of the draft. Licht also thanked Spytek for his role in the process, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the league’s personnel decisions.
The ripple effect of the aborted trade illustrates how inter‑team negotiations can reshape draft outcomes and roster priorities across the league. As the 2026 season approaches, both the Ravens and Buccaneers will look to integrate their new acquisitions—Vega Ioane on the offensive line and Rueben Bain on the defensive front—while the Raiders reset their strategy after missing out on both the trade and the 14th‑overall selection.
