Ibarapa Adepoju Resigns from PDP Amid Party Crisis

A federal lawmaker from Oyo State has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Anthony Adepoju, who represents the Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central constituency in the House of Representatives and is serving his second term, submitted a formal resignation letter to the PDP chairman of his ward on Thursday. The letter, obtained by DAILY POST, cites the party’s ongoing internal crises as the primary reason for his departure.

Adepoju contended that the prolonged disputes within the PDP have impaired his ability to perform his duties effectively. He noted that the discord has “created cracks within the party,” suggesting a loss of cohesion that could affect its political agenda and electoral prospects.

In the resignation letter, the lawmaker expressed regret that the decision might disappoint his supporters. “I regret how this resignation may be received by my millions of followers at home and abroad and I assure everyone that my next political move will be made known in due course,” he wrote.

Adepoju’s exit adds to a recent series of defections and internal realignments within Nigeria’s major political parties, particularly the PDP, which has been grappling with leadership disputes and factionalism since the 2023 general elections. His constituency, located in the southwestern state of Oyo, has historically been a stronghold for the PDP, and his departure could have implications for the party’s grassroots support in the region.

The resignation does not immediately trigger a by‑election, as Adepoju will retain his seat until the end of the current legislative term. However, the move raises questions about his future political alignment and the potential impact on the PDP’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Further statements from Adepoju or the PDP are awaited to clarify the next steps for both the lawmaker and the party.
