The Kwankwasiyya Movement on Friday defended the emerging political partnership between its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former presidential candidate Peter Obi, rebuking recent criticism as “unfair and misleading.” In a statement signed by the movement’s spokesperson, Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed, the group said the collaboration, being explored under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) platform, has been portrayed by some northern commentators as a threat to regional interests.

The statement acknowledged that many Nigerians view the alliance as a step toward greater national cohesion and a stronger opposition. However, it said a “select few” have launched “misleading narratives” aimed at discrediting Kwankwaso. According to the movement, the real anxiety stems not from the possibility of cooperation but from the political weight the joint platform could wield.

“The prospect of both leaders working together introduces a completely new political equation—one that transcends ethnicity, religion, and regional sentiment,” the statement read. Kwankwaso commands a deep grassroots network in northern states, especially Kano and the northwest, while Obi enjoys significant support among youths, urban dwellers, and voters in the south. The convergence of those bases, the movement argued, could reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape by bridging long‑standing regional divides.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement accused critics of applying a double standard, labeling Kwankwaso’s outreach as “ambitious” or “disruptive” while praising similar moves by other politicians as “strategic” or “patriotic.” It said such selective hostility reflects “political fear” rather than legitimate concern.

Defending Kwankwaso’s record, the statement emphasized that his relevance derives from years of service and direct engagement with voters, not from media promotion or federal appointments. It rejected attempts to reduce the partnership to “petty elite propaganda” and personal attacks, insisting that Nigerians facing economic, security, and governance challenges deserve issue‑based politics and credible leadership.

The movement urged political actors and commentators to adopt a fair, nationally‑oriented perspective, noting that democracy thrives on coalition‑building, inclusion, and healthy competition. “Any political understanding that seeks to unite Nigerians should be encouraged rather than demonized,” the statement concluded, reaffirming the Kwankwasiyya Movement’s commitment to a democratic future grounded in unity, mutual respect, and constructive national engagement.
