The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has confirmed the death of a first‑year student from the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics. The university announced on Sunday that 19‑year‑old Favour Olaniyi was found dead near his off‑campus residence on Saturday, 9 May 2026.

Adegbenro Adebanjo, Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol at FUTY, said university security was the first to report the incident to the police. “Officers from the force were dispatched to the scene while medical officials from the university and the security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue,” he told reporters in Akure.

The police have taken over the investigation and are currently gathering evidence. FUTA officials affirmed that the university is cooperating fully with law‑enforcement agencies. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time,” Adebanjo added.

The university has also informed Olaniyi’s parents of the tragic development. In the wake of the incident, the institution’s counselling services have been mobilised to support students who may be affected. “We are in touch with and providing counselling support to some of his co‑students who may have been impacted by the unfortunate incident,” the director said.

FUTY’s Student Affairs Division reiterated its long‑standing commitment to student welfare, urging any pupil experiencing personal or academic difficulties to utilise the available guidance and counselling resources on and off campus.

The case remains under police scrutiny, and further details will be released as the investigation progresses. The university’s response underscores its emphasis on student safety and mental‑health support amidst an increasingly precarious environment for Nigerian university students.
