Malam Jafaru Ibrahim Sani, who served as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and later as commissioner for Education under former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai, has announced his intention to contest the governorship on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The former commissioner has secured the party’s nomination forms and confirmed his bid in a statement, saying, “We are trying to be among the contenders. May Allah guide us.”
Sani’s declaration was made public after a gathering of ADC aspirants and party officials, where participants pledged to cooperate in the effort to secure the party’s ticket for the upcoming election. He was seen alongside fellow hopefuls, signaling a coordinated approach within the ADC to mount a credible challenge in Kaduna State.
The list of ADC aspirants now includes Isah Ashiru Kudan, Professor Muhammad Sani Bello, Shuaibu Idris Mikati and Tijjani Ahmad. All are vying for the party’s endorsement to become the ADC’s flag‑bearer for the state’s top office.
Sani’s entry into the race introduces a figure with executive experience in key state ministries. As commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, he oversaw grassroots administration and traditional institutions, while his tenure as commissioner for Education placed him at the helm of policy formulation for the state’s schools and tertiary institutions. Observers note that his dual portfolio gives him a blend of administrative and political exposure that could appeal to a broad cross‑section of voters.
The ADC, a minor party in the Nigerian political landscape, has been seeking to expand its relevance beyond its traditional strongholds. By consolidating its aspirants and presenting a unified front, the party aims to increase its visibility and competitiveness in Kaduna, a state traditionally dominated by the two major parties. Party officials indicated that the forthcoming primary will be managed in accordance with internal regulations, emphasizing transparency and fairness.
Political analysts suggest that Sani’s candidacy could reshape the dynamics of the contest, particularly if he leverages his former connections within the incumbent government and his record in education. However, the ADC still faces the challenge of building a robust grassroots apparatus capable of mobilising voters in a highly contested environment.
The next step for Sani and his fellow aspirants is the party’s primary election, after which the ADC will present its official candidate for the governorship. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether the party can translate its internal cohesion into a viable campaign that can influence the overall outcome in Kaduna State.
