APC announces screening date for Senate, House of Rep aspirants

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced a revised timetable for its National Assembly primary elections in Zamfara State. The adjustment was detailed in a statement released Saturday by the party’s national spokesperson, Felix Morka.

According to the communiqué, the Zamfara State House of Assembly primary will proceed as originally scheduled on Wednesday, 20 May, while the governorship primary is set for Thursday, 21 May. The presidential primary remains fixed for Monday, 23 May.

The revised schedule also outlines the timetable for handling appeals arising from the primaries. Appeals concerning the House of Representatives primary are slated for Tuesday, 19 May, and those related to the Senate primary will be heard on Wednesday, 20 May. Appeals against the House of Assembly primary results will be considered on Thursday, 21 May, and challenges to the governorship primary will be addressed on Friday, 22 May.

In the statement, Morka highlighted that the House of Representatives primary itself will now take place on Monday, 18 May, and the Senate primary on Tuesday, 19 May. The changes follow an earlier decision by the APC National Leadership, which had moved the House of Representatives primary by a day—from Friday, 15 May, to Saturday, 16 May—while leaving the dates for the Senate, State Houses of Assembly, governorship and presidential primaries unchanged.

The party did not offer an explanation for the latest adjustments. Nonetheless, the revised calendar aims to streamline the primary process and provide a clear window for dispute resolution ahead of the national elections.

The APC’s schedule revision underscores the importance of orderly intra‑party contests as Nigeria’s major parties gear up for the forthcoming general elections. By setting specific dates for both voting and appeal hearings, the party seeks to mitigate procedural disputes that could affect candidate selections.

Stakeholders, including aspirants and observers, will now focus on the upcoming primaries, which will determine the APC’s slate of candidates for the National Assembly and state executive positions in Zamfara. The outcomes are expected to shape the party’s competitiveness in the state, where it holds significant electoral influence.

The next development to watch will be the conduct of the House of Representatives and Senate primaries on 18 and 19 May, respectively, followed by the scheduled appeal hearings. These events will provide early indicators of the party’s internal cohesion and may influence broader electoral dynamics in the lead‑up to the national polls.
