A major new initiative is set to shake up Africa’s energy landscape, offering a $50,000 prize pool to turn academic theories into real-world solutions. Sahara Group has unveiled the Asharami M.A.D Equation, a programme aimed at tackling a persistent problem: groundbreaking research often gathers dust in university journals, never making the leap to practical use.
The challenge is clear. Across the continent, brilliant ideas from postgraduate and advanced researchers rarely see the light of day in the energy sector. Sahara Group’s programme directly connects these minds with the gritty, operational realities of the oil, gas, and power industries. The goal is to transform raw innovation into scalable projects that boost energy access, strengthen grid resilience, and drive sustainable development.
Ejiro Gray, Director of Governance and Sustainability at Sahara Group, stressed that Africa’s energy future hinges on converting knowledge into action. “The Asharami M.A.D Equation is intentionally designed to unlock the immense potential within Africa’s academic and research communities by linking innovation to industry needs,” she said. “The platform will empower a new generation of solution-driven thinkers capable of delivering practical interventions that improve energy reliability, expand access, and support sustainability goals across the continent.”
The programme welcomes entries from innovators across Africa. Ideas must demonstrate analytical depth, practical applicability, scalability, and a strong alignment with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities. The focus areas are critical: digitalisation of upstream operations, predictive maintenance, power reliability, and grid optimisation.
Bethel Obioma, Head of Corporate Communications at Sahara Group, emphasised that this is more than a funding exercise. “The Asharami M.A.D Equation goes beyond funding to create real impact,” he noted. “It is a deliberate investment in African ingenuity, one that empowers scholars and innovators to translate their work into solutions that strengthen energy systems, improve livelihoods, and drive inclusive growth.”
The financial stakes are significant. A total of $50,000 will be distributed: $25,000 for the winner, $15,000 for second place, and $10,000 for third. Beyond the cash, participants gain access to mentorship, technical support, and the chance to implement their solutions within Sahara Group’s own operations. Applications close on June 20, 2026.
