The legal team for Luigi Mangione is set to argue that the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was suffering from an “extreme emotional disturbance” at the time of the shooting, a New York judge disclosed Tuesday.
Mangione, 28, is accused of gunning down Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, 2024. He was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania following a nationwide manhunt.
He faces nine felony counts in New York state court, including second-degree murder. His state trial is slated to begin in September. Mangione also faces separate charges in Pennsylvania and in federal court.
Acting New York Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro, overseeing the case, said he will unseal records related to the psychiatric defense. Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, argued that doing so could compromise the federal case, according to the Associated Press.
