The Imo State Police Command has summoned former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, his deputy Gerald Irona, and Coalition of United Political Parties spokesperson Ikenga Ugochinyere to appear for alleged murder, kidnapping and arson cases. A letter of invitation, addressed to the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Charles Ugwu, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police for Administration Ukachi Opara, requested that the trio be produced on Thursday at the State Criminal Bureau.
The letter, dated March 13, 2023, was seen by our correspondent in Owerri on Wednesday. Titled “Re: Case of murder, kidnapping and arson,” it stated: “The office of State Intelligence Bureau, Imo State Police Command, State Headquarters Owerri, is investigating the above‑underlined case involving some prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party, Imo State chapter. The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, requests you come along with the following persons—Emeka Ihedioha, Ikenga Ugochinyere, Gerald Irona—to interview the commissioner of police through the officer in charge of State Intelligence Bureau, Owerri, on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. promptly.”
When contacted, PDP state spokesperson Collins Opuruozor confirmed the authenticity of the police invitation. The party’s legal adviser, Kissinger Ikeokwu, added that the State Working Committee had received the same invitation, asking the state party chairman to produce Ihedioha, Irona and Ugochinyere at the SIB unit of the command headquarters in Owerri on Thursday. However, Ihedioha’s spokesperson, Chibuike Onyeukwu, said he had seen the invitation on social media and needed time to verify its authenticity.
