Gunmen have killed Reuben Owie, the 85-year-old secretary and leader of the Iyowa community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The attack occurred on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 8:15 p.m. at Owie’s residence on No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road in Benin City.
According to the Edo State Police Command, two unidentified armed men entered the octogenarian’s home and shot him in the head. He died at the scene. The incident was reported by the victim’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem confirmed the killing in a statement issued on Saturday, August 8, 2026. She said officers visited the location, documented the scene, and recovered the body. The remains have been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
Ikoedem stated that an investigation is underway and that the command has intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects. No motive has been established, and no arrests have been announced.
The killing of a respected community elder and leader has raised concern among residents of Iyowa and surrounding areas. Local leaders have called for a thorough probe and improved security in the region.
