Sixteen-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson claimed Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s under-23 epee at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, delivering a dominant performance on home soil at Rugby School Nigeria in Lagos.
Competing under the Nigerian flag for the first time after switching allegiance from England, the teenager swept through the field with precision. He capped his run with a decisive 15–5 victory over India’s Lokesh Vemani, the reigning Asian champion, in the final. India’s Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya shared the bronze medals.
Esiovwa-Thompson’s path to the title was nearly flawless. He topped Pool 4 without a loss to earn a direct entry into the round of 16, where he dispatched South Africa’s Karabo Mathobela 15–7. A 15–2 quarter-final demolition of India’s Shivaansh Kapoor followed. The sternest test came in the semi-final against Shaurya, but roared on by a partisan crowd, the Nigerian edged a tight 15–11 contest to reach the showpiece.
The victory marks a striking return to the top of the podium for the young fencer. Before his allegiance switch, Esiovwa-Thompson won gold in the under-13 boys’ epee at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge and secured a team bronze in the cadet men’s epee event at the European Championships in Naples, both while representing England.
His triumph headlines a strong opening for the host nation at the continental championship. Elsewhere, England’s Oliver Strange captured the men’s under-23 foil title with a win over India’s Manoj Patil, while Singh Sanasam of India and England’s Thomas James claimed the bronze medals.
For Nigerian fencing, the breakthrough signals the arrival of a prodigious talent capable of inspiring a new generation. With the junior ranks swelling and infrastructure improving, Esiovwa-Thompson’s gold may well prove the catalyst for sustained success on the international stage.
